The Proof is in the Pudding: Helena Vigils Story

by Admin on December 21, 2015

The old saying, “The proof is in the pudding,” comes from the understanding that that you can only judge the quality of something after you have tried, used, or experienced it.

Sometimes we just need to see the proof first to be encouraged. Proof that change is possible, that we can make healthy goals and accomplish them. Here is that “proof” from one of our favorite encouragers in DumBell Fitness®, Helena Vigil.

“My fitness journey began in September 2012 when my husband deployed for 9-10 months. I was somewhere between 175-180lbs.  I joined a local stroller fitness program and that’s where I met my friend Lezlie who encouraged me to give running a try.  I was never a runner in High School or after. I thought running was crazy and who wants to run for miles when you can drive. She created at group called Fit Wahines Rock and each week we would run together.  I started out having a hard time running 1 mile, but with each week I would surprise myself and ran further and further. We were training for the Great Aloha Run (GAR) in February 2013. I lived in Hawaii for most of my life and never ran it before.  After the GAR I caught the race bug. I ran 2 more races before my husband returned home. A month before my husband returned I joined DumBell Fitness.  A friend from stroller fitness program told me about it and I was looking for a something to really challenge me.  By this time I was running 2 times a week and going to the stroller fitness program 2 times a week.  After my first class with DumBell Fitness I was hooked. My husband returned in June 2013 and by then I had lost 20lbs.  He loved the new me and I was in better shape than when we met.

So my usual standard is to gain weight when my husband is home. But taking boot camp classes and running helped me to not only NOT gain weight, but also keep losing weight. I started taking DumBell Fitness (DBF) classes 2 times a week and then about 8 months later I switched to 3 times a week. The thing I love the most about DBF is being around encouraging women and no matter your size or fitness level we all encourage each other. My eating habits have changed a lot since 2012 when I started my fitness journey. I eat a lot more vegetables and fruit and cook clean for my family. We don’t eat a lot of processed foods and my kids and husband are healthier for that. Also I get to talk about healthy eating habits at Boot Camp and not get put down because of it. Not all of my family understands this journey to health I am on and why I don’t want a dozen donuts left at my house.

I am now 138lbs and in the best shape of my life. Since my first GAR in 2013 I have ran it every year, including seven 5Ks, 8 half marathons, and this month I ran my first full marathon. DumBell Fitness has helped me become the strongest and healthiest me. How can you not want to jump on the bandwagon and not get healthy when you’re surrounded by so many strong women and always hearing Christina-isms. If it wasn’t for DumBell Fitness and all the awesome friends I’ve meet through this program, I don’t know if I would have felt confident enough to run a marathon. You don’t have to be the fastest runner to call yourself a runner. You just need to run. You never know what your capable of until you try it. I am so thankful for DumBell Fitness and I know my family is too because they have a strong and healthy wife and mommy.”
